Watching over care, weaving complexity: for an epistemology of nursing practice

Lorem This essay examines nursing practice as a field of knowledge requiring permanent epistemological vigilance. It argues that care is not merely a technical application derived from biomedical knowledge, but rather a complex rationality integrating biological, subjective, historical, and political dimensions. To support this thesis, the work articulates Michel Foucault's archaeology of knowledge, Esther Díaz's expanded epistemology, Edgar Morin's complex thought, and Barbara Carper's patterns of knowledge tradition. The analysis is structured around two axes: the denaturalization of care practices through critique of the truth regimes that shape them, and the vindication of practical knowledge that maintains rigor while rejecting reductionism. Two conceptual charts are included, systematizing epistemological tensions in the nursing care process under paradigms of simplification and complexity, as well as a Foucauldian archaeology of care epistemes. The essay concludes that nursing's disciplinary consolidation depends on its ability to sustain tension between scientific evidence, experiential knowledge, and ethical-political commitment, without resolving it in favor of any single rationality.
