Preoperative anxiety levels in patients from the Mixteca Baja region of Oaxaca

Introduction: Preoperative anxiety is described as an unpleasant state of restlessness, a secondary tension to the association of a patient concerned about illness, the anesthesia process, the surgical procedure, and being hospitalized. Objective: To measure the level of anxiety in preoperative patients in a second-level care unit in the Lower Mixteca of Oaxaca. Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional, and prospective study was conducted, with a non-experimental design, with a sample of 67 hospitalized patients indicated for surgery. Confidence level of 95 % and margin of error 5 %. For data collection, the Preoperative Anxiety Survey in Hospitalized Patients was used, and data analysis was conducted using the Statistica Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 26.0. Results: the predominant sociodemographic characteristics were: age range from 20 to 29 years with 41.8 %, female sex with 86.6 %, marital status single with 52.2 %, low socioeconomic status with 46.3 % (n = 31), educational level: secondary with 29.9 % and previous surgical interventions 82.1 % (n = 55). The preoperative anxiety level of the patients corresponds to a moderate level, which was reflected in 74.6 % of the participants (n = 50). Conclusions: hospitalized patients in a secondary care unit in the Mixteca Baja region of Oaxaca experience a moderate level of preoperative anxiety.
