Psychosomatic medicine as a basis for collective health, applied in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis: a systematic review.

Psychosomatic medicine proposes a holistic approach to health, considering the mind-body interaction, which is particularly relevant in chronic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an inflammatory autoimmune disease that causes pain, disability, and a decline in quality of life. The objective was to analyze recent evidence on the effectiveness of psychosomatic interventions in patients with RA. A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines in PubMed and Google Scholar (2020–2025), using the terms “Arthritis, Rheumatoid” AND “psychosomatic therapy.” Nine studies were selected after applying eligibility criteria. The results show that psychological and psychosomatic interventions—such as acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness, and family therapy—contribute to reducing pain, anxiety, and depression, improving emotional adjustment, and enhancing quality of life. It is concluded that psychosomatic medicine is a promising therapeutic complement, although more robust clinical studies are needed to strengthen its scientific evidence.
