Proposal for a health and safety program for the prevention of occupational risk and accidents in the agro-industrial sector

The present study aimed to propose a health and safety program to prevent occupational hazards and accidents in the agro-industrial sector in Buena Fe, Ecuador. A mixed approach with descriptive and exploratory design was used, applying surveys and semi-structured interviews to 12 participants, including workers and supervisors from an agro-industrial company. The instruments were designed and validated to assess risk perception, working conditions, and safety practices. The results indicate that workers recognize the presence of physical, chemical, and ergonomic hazards, but lack adequate training. The participants expressed willingness to engage in preventive programs and highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach that includes risk assessment, ongoing training, provision and supervision of PPE use, and the promotion of a participatory organizational culture. It is concluded that the implementation of a structured program tailored to the specific characteristics of the sector can improve worker safety and well-being. It is recommended that the research be expanded to different regions and subsectors, as well as longitudinal studies be conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed interventions.
